Amy
comes home late at night...
- The 17-year-old
Amy comes home late at night at about 2am.
- Her parents
have waited for her in the kitchen and are furious about her getting
home late.
- Therefore
Amy and her parents have an argument. Amy feels being treated like a
12-year-old child.
- As she
doesn´t want to be disobedient to her parents she reluctantly
accepts her parent´s point of view.
- She throws
herself onto her bed and breaks out into tears.
The
next morning...
- The next
morning she phones Adam to tell him that she has been grounded for a week
(1 Woche Stubenarrest)
Her voice is timid and full of shyness as she doesn´t know how he
will react.Yet Adam has pity for her.
(Adam even compares Amy´s parents with the KGB.
- Being ground
by her parents Amy is very unhappy to miss the beach party but Adam does
his best to cheer her and shows her his sympathy again.
- During the
telephone call the colour game is first mentioned. (p. 19, l. 16)
- We learn
that Amy gives private lessons to Adam´s sister Bettina.
(Again Amy has butterflies in her chest)
With Hideo and Sue... - Later
on, Amy and her parents visit Hideo and his wife Sue.
- There in
his house, Hideo´s parents are reserved towards Sue, who has curly
blond hair and is not a traditional Japanese.
- Hideo is
the one who cooks and his father dislikes that. (role conflict)
- The reader
gets some more information about the color game at school.

- Kids get to wear color armbands which represent different
social classes
- The bands have to be worn for 24 hours a day for the next
4 weeks.
