- At the beginning of Chapter V Amy really regrets that she can´t
be together with Adam, an orange.
If they were seen together he would be punished, fined or made a fool
of.
- She starts believing that money makes more difference than color.
- Later on Brian, a blue, asks Amy to dance with him at the halloween
party.
Yet she remembers promising the dance to Adam and so she refuses seeing
Adam who frowns.
- Brian is angry about this refusal and reminds her of the law that
it is not permitted to socialize with oranges.
The next day Mr. Otero divides the 4 groups into "teks
= women" and "non-teks = men"
The rules at a glance:
- no-teks must curtsy to teks of their color and of higher colors.
- no-teks always have to sit behind teks of the same color.
- teks get more money for the same work as "no-teks" of the
same color just opposite of how it is in real life.

Then violations against the rules are reported by the G4.
Both Adam and Amy are under "criticism" |
|
|
Adam is reproached for having spoken to a
blue. He is fined and in addition to that the G4 makes him clear
that his life can be made pretty miserable in case he goes
on disregarding the rules. |

|
Amy doesn´t demand the respect of inferiors and
she has spoken to an orange. However she is not fined.
|
|
|
Amy thinks for the first time of a "rebellion"
but Carol, a friend of hers and a dark blue, is not willing to
support her. Amy hopes that Carol won´t sneak on her.
